A Note from Mr. Burris
Dear BCS Families,
A word that has been on my mind lately is opportunity.
You’ve likely heard the old saying, “Strike while the iron is hot.” Another way of expressing this idea is found in the Latin phrase carpe diem, which means “seize the day.” Scripture gives us a similar exhortation in the Old Testament:
Ecclesiastes 9:10
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…”
Opportunity is often said to knock only once. Whether or not that is always true, what is certain is this: every moment we are given is an opportunity to glorify the Lord. In truth, both the joyful moments and the challenging ones provide us with opportunities to honor God.
What a gift it is to face each day with a mindset that intentionally looks for ways to glorify Him.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism begins with this foundational question:
What is the chief end of man?
Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.
Our primary purpose could not be clearer. As a school, this truth has direct application for both our faculty and our students as we teach, learn, serve, and grow together each day.
I also love how John Piper captures this idea so well:
“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”
May we join together today in looking for opportunities to glorify God, aiming to do so with hearts and minds that are deeply satisfied in Christ.
In Him,
Cody Burris
