Just a few short weeks ago several of our students participated in the Brazoria County Fair. We have such talented students of all ages, and it’s definitely exciting to see them shine in our local community. Sarah Heimeyer served as the Fair Queen candidate for Brazosport Christian School with Seth Henderson as her escort. Both part of the Class of 2023, Sarah intends to continue her education into Animal Science and is looking into Ranger and Wildlife Management after high school while Seth looks to attend Texas A&M University College Station and study Aerospace Engineering.

Sarah had the opportunity to represent our school and meet students from all over Brazoria County by delivering awards to some of the placing participants. Award winning can be an emotionally happy time for participants and a beautiful picture was captured of this very experience. Thank you Sarah for being a vital part of BCS and taking the time to devote your volunteering and kindness to our local community.

Art is a big part of the fair, and Mrs. Evans entered in several pieces of art from our students. If you haven’t walked the inner halls of the school where the artwork is displayed, I encourage you to stop in and take a look at all of the artistic talent that is in these walls! Several students won awards listed below, but we are so proud of all of our students for sharing their gifts and representing our school through the fair. Thank you parents for choosing BCS as your school of choice and allowing us to educate your child(ren) and teach them the way to walk with Jesus.

Great things are happening at BCS on a regular basis! It’s hard to capture each and every event, but I try to get them all into the weekly blogs. Cheek with us each week as we list what’s going on and post a few pictures of the events!

Martial Arts

Premier Martial Arts of Lake Jackson visited campus this week and taught several PE classes some Martial Arts techniques.  Dakota Perry who is the Program Director was one of the two instructors on site, and is an Alumni from BCS Class of 2014.  Tyler Raymond is the head instructor and has been doing martial arts since the age of 13. 

We want to say a big thank you to them for their time in working with our children this week!

Pep Rally

We enjoyed having our first Pep Rally on the new Gym Floor last week! Our BCS cheerleaders did an amazing job of pumping up the Eagle Spirit as we introduced the athletic teams and even had a pie in the face contest that Mr. Sikes and Mrs. Pulido tied in! We are so thankful that they are not only good sports, but amazing leaders for BCS. It was fun had by all as we went into the JH boys last football game of the season and a win for both JH and Varsity Football teams against Living Stones in Alvin.

BCS Serve Day

Twice a year Brazosport Christian School heads out into our wonderful community to serve others. We use this time to teach our students the importance of putting others above yourself, meeting local business owners and community leaders, and also HAVE FUN! In Matthew 5:16, it states “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”. It is important that we lead by example and encourage our students to take upon the task of helping others. Although it seems a simple task to send out students to help, it’s actually quite a difficult day to organize. We couldn’t do it without the leadership in our school, and local churches offering the use of their buses and vans to transport students to the different locations.

With the help of our local community, we were able to go out and teach our students the importance of taking the time to help others. Every student ranging from Preschool through 12th grade participated in cleaning, collecting trash, weeding flower beds, re-doing bulletin boards, painting lockers, sorting food products, picking fresh vegetables, learning what is all involved in horse maintenance and SO MUCH MORE! This is truly one of the favorite days for BCS! If you know of a place in need of volunteer work, please feel free to contact the school, we are always looking for more places to volunteer. Our school takes advantage of field trips when we get the chance as it creates excitement, but also provides hands-on learning opportunities. Our preschool thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Farmer’s Corral and learning all about farms and farm animals!

Spirit Week

Meet our Librarian, Mrs. Shoemaker

Mrs. Shoemaker has a long history at BCS as an Alumni (attending BCS from Pre-k through 12th grade graduation). She says that growing up in our school hallways led her to listen to God’s calling and send her own children here for schooling as well. While the thought about becoming a Librarian had never crossed her mind, when the position opened, she was excited about filling the role since she was already a parent volunteer helping in that area. Some fun facts about her are that her favorite color is green, her favorite number is the number 7, and one of her biggest achievements as librarian has been cleaning out and upgrading resources in our library.

When asked what a typical day looks like as the librarian here at BCS, she laughed and said “craziness”! It’s stocking shelves with books, labeling new books coming in, fixing damaged books, planning lessons, and preparing for students of all ages. Her favorite part of the day is hearing how much the students love going to the library. “It’s amazing to see the excitement of the students checking books out and bringing them back again to find a new adventure to read.” The role of librarian aids in encouraging a love of reading to the students from a young age and is implemented to the students by Mrs. Shoemaker in the encouragement of using their imaginations with the books and stories. Incorporating interactive reading activities that often include a craft, lesson, and scripture that go along with that week’s story are a fun way to teach and learn.

“Books are a fundamental part of the foundation of education and help build language and vocabulary.” The school library is a great place to start building that foundation in a fun way to enhance the education the students are receiving in the classroom. Although Mrs. Shoemaker has stated that she is not normally a bookworm, she thoroughly enjoys reading each week’s book lineup and preparing lessons for the different grade levels. Her vision of the library would be to grow the “series” book selection for our students, and bring back the Excellerator Reader which consists of bringing in updated technology. The book fair is a great way for her to find out what books and book series the students are interested in for the library and gives her a chance to order updated books from the proceeds the school receives from orders.

The book fair not only provides funds for the library and classrooms each year, but it’s an opportunity for students to browse and potentially take home books to add to their own personal collections.
