Sarah Heimeyer served as the Fair Queen candidate for Brazosport Christian School with Seth Henderson as her escort.Just a few short weeks ago several of our students participated in the Brazoria County Fair. We have such talented students of all ages, and it’s definitely exciting to see them shine in our local community. Sarah Heimeyer served as the Fair Queen candidate for Brazosport Christian School with Seth Henderson as her escort. Both part of the Class of 2023, Sarah intends to continue her education into Animal Science and is looking into Ranger and Wildlife Management after high school while Seth looks to attend Texas A&M University College Station and study Aerospace Engineering.

BCS's very own Fair Queen candidate delivering award to a participant.Sarah had the opportunity to represent our school and meet students from all over Brazoria County by delivering awards to some of the placing participants. Award winning can be an emotionally happy time for participants and a beautiful picture was captured of this very experience. Thank you Sarah for being a vital part of BCS and taking the time to devote your volunteering and kindness to our local community.

Art is a big part of the fair, and Mrs. Evans entered in several pieces of art from our students. If you haven’t walked the inner halls of the school where the artwork is displayed, I encourage you to stop in and take a look at all of the artistic talent that is in these walls! Several students won awards listed below, but we are so proud of all of our students for sharing their gifts and representing our school through the fair. Thank you parents for choosing BCS as your school of choice and allowing us to educate your child(ren) and teach them the way to walk with Jesus.

October Recap

Written by Anna Magallanes, Director of Development

Great things are happening at BCS on a regular basis! It’s hard to capture each and every event, but I try to get them all into the weekly blogs. Cheek with us each week as we list what’s going on and post a few pictures of the events!

Preschool teacher and students dressed in purple without planning it!Do you ever have those days where everything just works out perfectly?  Well Mrs. Menard’s Preschool class definitely had one of those days recently when every single child (and the teacher) wore a shade of purple!!  After googling the meaning of the color purple it states that it represents power and ambition among other great things!  I think this class is definitely headed into leadership! Preschool also recently did the great pumpkin drop as they dropped pumpkins to learn about gravity.

Martial Arts

BCS student ready to kick prop with the guidance from martial arts instructor.
Premier Martial Arts of Lake Jackson visited campus this week and taught several PE classes some Martial Arts techniques.  Dakota Perry who is the Program Director was one of the two instructors on site, and is an Alumni from BCS Class of 2014.  Tyler Raymond is the head instructor and has been doing martial arts since the age of 13.  If you are interested in further information on Premier Martial Arts which is the only mixed martial arts studio in Brazoria County, teaching Krav Maga, Taekwondo, Karate, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jujitsu, please check out their website at https://premiermartialarts.com/lakejackson/ and check out their November special of 20% off.  We want to say a big thank you to them for their time in working with our children this week!

Pep Rally

Head of School and Principal standing together showing that they are good sports after pie in the face contest

We enjoyed having our first Pep Rally on the new Gym Floor last week! Our BCS cheerleaders did an amazing job of pumping up the Eagle Spirit as we introduced the athletic teams and even had a pie in the face contest that Mr. Sikes and Mrs. Pulido tied in! We are so thankful that they are not only good sports, but amazing leaders for BCS. It was fun had by all as we went into the JH boys last football game of the season and a win for both JH and Varsity Football teams against Living Stones in Alvin.

Cross Country

BCS Cross Country Team
This week our Varsity Cross Country team participated in the State Run for TAPPS. We had a great season with (3) school records being broken, (2) by Noah Norrell, and (1) by Emma Rhyne. Great job across the board to all of our Cross Country Runners! Go Eagles!

Serve Day, Preschool, and Spirit Week

BCS Serve BusBCS Serve Day

Twice a year Brazosport Christian School heads out into our wonderful community to serve others. We use this time to teach our students the importance of putting others above yourself, meeting local business owners and community leaders, and also HAVE FUN! In Matthew 5:16, it states “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”. It is important that we lead by example and encourage our students to take upon the task of helping others. Although it seems a simple task to send out students to help, it’s actually quite a difficult day to organize. We couldn’t do it without the leadership in our school, and local churches offering the use of their buses and vans to transport students to the different locations.

BCS Serve JH ClassWith the help of our local community, we were able to go out and teach our students the importance of taking the time to help others. Every student ranging from Preschool through 12th grade participated in cleaning, collecting trash, weeding flower beds, re-doing bulletin boards, painting lockers, sorting food products, picking fresh vegetables, learning what is all involved in horse maintenance and SO MUCH MORE! This is truly one of the favorite days for BCS! If you know of a place in need of volunteer work, please feel free to contact the school, we are always looking for more places to volunteer. We visited the locations listed below and had so much fun serving our community.

Preschool Field Trip

Our school takes advantage of field trips when we get the chance as it creates excitement, but also provides hands-on learning opportunities. Our preschool thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Farmer’s Corral and learning all about farms and farm animals!

Spirit Week

Spirit week has been SO much fun!!! The students (and staff) really stepped up and dressed in different themes daily. Each year this is definitely a favorite week for school! Monday was PJ Day, Tuesday was mismatched day, Wednesday was Country vs. Preppy, Thursday was class colors, and Friday was Decades day or school spirit day. Go Eagles!

Meet our Librarian, Mrs. Shoemaker

Meet our Librarian, Mrs. Shoemaker

Written by Anna Magallanes, Director of Development

BCS Library in MotionMeet our Librarian, Mrs. Shoemaker

Mrs. Shoemaker has a long history at BCS as an Alumni (attending BCS from Pre-k through 12th grade graduation). She says that growing up in our school hallways led her to listen to God’s calling and send her own children here for schooling as well. While the thought about becoming a Librarian had never crossed her mind, when the position opened, she was excited about filling the role since she was already a parent volunteer helping in that area. Some fun facts about her are that her favorite color is green, her favorite number is the number 7, and one of her biggest achievements as librarian has been cleaning out and upgrading resources in our library.

When asked what a typical day looks like as the librarian here at BCS, she laughed and said “craziness”! It’s stocking shelves with books, labeling new books coming in, fixing damaged books, planning lessons, and preparing for students of all ages. Her favorite part of the day is hearing how much the students love going to the library. “It’s amazing to see the excitement of the students checking books out and bringing them back again to find a new adventure to read.” The role of librarian aids in encouraging a love of reading to the students from a young age and is implemented to the students by Mrs. Shoemaker in the encouragement of using their imaginations with the books and stories. Incorporating interactive reading activities that often include a craft, lesson, and scripture that go along with that week’s story are a fun way to teach and learn.

“Books are a fundamental part of the foundation of education and help build language and vocabulary.” The school library is a great place to start building that foundation in a fun way to enhance the education the students are receiving in the classroom. Although Mrs. Shoemaker has stated that she is not normally a bookworm, she thoroughly enjoys reading each week’s book lineup and preparing lessons for the different grade levels. Her vision of the library would be to grow the “series” book selection for our students, and bring back the Excellerator Reader which consists of bringing in updated technology. The book fair is a great way for her to find out what books and book series the students are interested in for the library and gives her a chance to order updated books from the proceeds the school receives from orders.

BCS preschool student readingThe book fair not only provides funds for the library and classrooms each year, but it’s an opportunity for students to browse and potentially take home books to add to their own personal collections. We hope that you can join us at our open house on October 20th from 6:00 – 7:30 to enjoy dinner supporting BCS scholarships, classroom games, and to visit the book fair in person with your child or grandchild. Pre-Order your dinner by clicking Here. If you are unable to attend, or would like to place a book fair order online, please visit our book fair website by clicking Here.

High School Retreat

2022 BCS HS RetreatCamp Cho-Yeh

Each year our high school students are loaded up on buses and head off to high school retreat for 3 days to give our students an opportunity to reflect in nature, worship, lower stress levels, find a sense of calm, and above all, have fun. The opportunity to reflect on their faith and build a community with their peers is a high priority for this trip. Camp Cho-Yeh in Livingston, TX was the location for this year’s camp, and the students enjoyed so many fun activities to create memories for a lifetime. Below are 2 high school testimonies from this inspiring trip.
Camp Cho-Yeh

Klark’s Overview at Camp Cho-Yeh

Before leaving the school at around 9:00 am, our head of school Mr. Sykes gave us the devastating news that we (the juniors and seniors) would be driving to Camp Cho-Yeh in the notorious wrapped bus. This bus was known for possibly breaking down or losing its A/C in the middle of its journey. However, for this trip, it did neither of those. Because of what could only be explained by the phrase “a Fun slide at Camp Cho-Yehmiracle from God,” the bus made it to and from Camp Cho-Yeh. The day the high school arrived at the camp, we were allowed full freedom to explore around the camp. Seth and I went around and found “the pillow,” some giant slides, and a huge tree house. At around 1 pm, we went to eat lunch which was prepared by the great staff at the camp. The lunch ladies were very hard-working and also kind enough to let us have seconds. The rest of the week included numerous activities such as the following: a zip line, the tree house, blobbing people into the lake, the king of the hill at the pool, a fun mud run, and archery tag. We also had multiple worship sessions and times of discipleship led by Bo Carter with Bella and Shane Newby, as well as being led by Coach Burris and Coach Martin. These are where God planted a seed into my heart to correct my actions and my heart. God brought back to me Matthew 15: 17-19. “17“ Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Also he brought back to me the beginning of Mark 1 where John is seen living his life completely by faith. He dropped everything he had to follow God’s promise to witness the Messiah coming to the earth.

Building Team Work at Camp Cho-YehElijah’s Overview of Camp Cho-Yeh

This year for our highschool retreat we went to Camp Cho-Yeh. It was not like any of the other camps we have gone to. On the day of arrival I could tell it was different. There was more to do and we could explore the camp on our own. When it was time for our first meal, the staff there was very helpful and told us how to properly get our food. All of the ladies that prepared our food were very kind. After our lunch we went over to the activity side of camp where there was archery, rifle shooting, and ax throwing. All of the activities were great. After that we went back to our cabins so we could change into our swimsuits. The pool had a huge slide and a king of the hill dome. The staff taught us new tricks to do on the slide and joined in our games of king of the hill. On the second day we went to breakfast and had a delicious meal. After that we went to chapel. The chapel was led by Mr. Bo and Coach Papi. After that we went ziplining and to play archery tag. At around 2pm we walked up to a sports field to do a mud race. I participated in this event and I was covered head to toe in mud once I was done. It was the grossest thing I have ever done but it was the best thing we did at camp. When we were covered in mud we washed it all off in the lake. They had a slide and a couple blobs. Sadly we had our time cut short by oncoming weather. We were told we had to exit the lake. After this Zip Lining at Camp Cho-YehI and a couple classmates went to our cabin and cleaned and took a nap until it was time for dinner. After dinner we went to chapel even though it was still raining. Once the chapel was over we went back to the pool for thirty short minutes. Around 9:50 pm we went back to our cabin and went to bed. In the last few hours of our camp we packed up, went to breakfast, and to chapel one last time. After chapel we checked our cabin for any left items then hopped on the bus and headed home. It was one of the best retreats that I have ever been on with this school, and I would love to go again.

First Week of School Recap

BCS Students Heading to Class on 1st day of schoolThe halls are filled with students’ laughter and joy again as school has started up this week!  New friends are being made, new classes are being attended, teachers and students alike are working out the kinks of scheduling, seating charts, and first week jitters.  This year Brazosport Christian School is accomodating almost 300 students on campus and it’s amazing to see and hear the shuffling of so many spirit filled students as they move from one class to the next.

Super fun preschool learningPre-school at Brazosport Christian School consists of exploring our world with their senses and incorporating learning with play.  Our Preschoolers have a curriculum they follow that includes classes such as physical education, art, music, library, and chapel.  Individual work, as well as large and small group times provide opportunities for hands-on learning that reinforce skills that prepare them for kindergarten and elementary school.

BCS Elementary Students with new curriculumOur elementary students have the opportunity to be learning with our new curriculum this year!  “BJU Press provides educational materials written from a  biblical worldview that focus on academic rigor and encourage critical thinking – all supported by appropriate educational technology.”  (bjupress.com).  With this highly engaging and active curriculum, our students grow spiritually and intellectually.  Elementary students also enjoy classes such as art, music, physical education, library, and chapel.

BCS Students at tableJunior High at Brazosport Christian School has exploded this year on campus.  All grade levels have split into two classes to accommodate the students and still keep the small class size that we strive to achieve.  We help each student meet their potential with academic challenges and personal growth opportunities.  Along with their core studies, Junior High students have classes such as art, music, technology, physical education, library, and chapel.  Sports are also introduced to this group of students with football, volleyball, and cheerleading to start the school off.

BCS HS Students having a little funHigh School at Brazosport Chirstian School is college preparatory with an implementation of a strong spiritual community.  Core classes for high school and dual credit are offered along with extracurricular sports, electives, and opportunities to serve spiritually.  BCS offers an environment where daily prayer, weekly chapel, contact with christian leaders, and bible studies help the students be prepared intellectually and spiritually for life after graduation.

Dean of Students, Cynthia Woodward and Office Assistant, Lisa BoyettThe day before school started our wonderful PTF provided an amazing breakfast to our faculty and staff.  If you are interested in helping out with PTF or any of the volunteer opportunities they offer, please visit our website at 1bcs.org and find PTF for information on how to join in on the fun!

This has been an amazing first week of school!  Brazosport Christian School wants to thank you for choosing our educational system for your family and are glad to have you as an Eagle.  Welcome to the new families and welcome back to our existing families, it’s going to be a great year!
